(More) tape nails!

Hey, Buddy here (I feel like I need to say that each time because you probably just assume it’s Rover.) I know I haven’t done too many nail posts – oh wait, I haven’t done any. Sorry about that!

So anyway, I was contemplating whether or not to post this nail design. I took this picture yesterday, and it’s pretty bad quality but I wanted to post it anyway… I don’t really know why. I got this idea from somewhere and thought it would be cool to try, but of course in the end it turned out not that great.

Well, here it is:

Image

I used Deborah Lippmann Sparks Fly (thanks for that one, Rover!) and a regular pink I got for probably $1. I love this idea, but the colors don’t go quite so well as I had imagined.

Turns out you have to wait a loooong time before you put on the tape or it gets all messed up. I’m way too impatient for this design, so I probably won’t be trying this any time soon.

Well, that’s about it!

What shape should your nails be??

Apparently I should have square nails, which is what I’m planning to do as soon as I take off my polka dot nails 🙂 I think they’re probably going to end up round despite my best efforts, though… Sigh.

NailShapes

I was doing a little research on nail shapes and came across this great article on the Nicole by OPI website!  Check out their chart that explains which nail shape looks best for your fingers and nail bed size.  I didn’t even realize there was a science to it until now!  (You can click either of the above images to read the article from the Nicole by OPI website.)

I would love to have square-shaped nails.  Square is my fave!  But I can’t seem to keep mine square…especially when they are long.  They naturally round a bit on their own (or break!).  The diagram says I should have square nails too- but I think mine might actually be squoval.  Oh well, close enough I suppose!

What shape nails should you have according to the chart?

Scaly Nails

I know, I know — I’m only supposed to paint my nails once a week. But I just found this picture on my iPod from… hmm, about 2 weeks before I started this blog, which is to say dating from early June.

Image

It’s a terrible photo. The nails are terribly out of focus but the carpet is perfectly in focus! Frustrating iPod pictures. Argh.

But bad pictures aside, this was a very fun nail design to do. I started with a base coat of orange, did the scale outlines (would they be called scales? not sure) with brown acrylic paint and a toothpick, and then finished filling it in with yellow/purple.

I’m not exactly sure, but I think the nail polishes I used were: Sally Hansen Mellow Yellow, and the orange/purple were these strange nail polishes I bought in China (don’t know what they’re called as I can’t read Chinese characters haha).

New Sandals (our first non-nails, gardening, cooking, traveling, or origami post)

I never even considered this being a fashion blog, but… well, all the other nail art blogs have a little fashion mixed in, so why can’t we? (just yesterday I was describing everything as “too mainstream”… haha)

So anyways, yesterday I dropped by DSW Shoes (which isn’t even cheap!) and got these:

Image

I wasn’t — and I’m still not — sure if they’re a little too conservative. But whatever. They’re super comfy and match a lot of stuff 🙂 The downside was that they were pretty expensive (around $40… gasp), which was a lot more than I was expecting to pay. But I THINK I’ll wear them a lot, so…

Hello from Canada!

Hey everyone! Guess who’s in British Columbia, Canada? (I told you I would post once I was here, didn’t I?) Anyway, we’re staying in a hotel in Victoria. Although I’m being completely unproductive, I’m having a great time with my family. But that’s what vacations are for. Too bad we’re only staying for 4 days… Ok, I’ll stop rambling and let you see the pictures.

That’s it for now! Sorry they’re all small and random sizes… I tried to fix that but I’m not good with those kinds of things. I’ll do better next time 🙂

Mani… Thursdays?

My nails are in bad shape. Their surfaces are peeling a little, and they’re all pale and brittle, the poor things. And that’s not even taking my cuticles into account. The point is, they’ve been treated badly these last few months so I’ve decided to give them a break and only paint them once a week, and also leave them to be their natural selves once in a while. Also, things are getting busier around here (summer soccer practices which Buddy gets to skip because of her Canadian adventures, and flute competitions coming up, etc.) and I won’t be able to keep redoing my nails. Plus I’ve run out of ideas (suggestions are welcome!!) that I can do without special stuff like dotting tools, stripers, etc.

Anyways. Because “Mani Mondays” are too mainstream, I’ve decided to do Mani Thursdays! Today I did a polka dot thing (using a bobby pin! because dotting tools are too mainstream):

MT1 -- Polka Dots final(note the “Kibbles Jr & Nails thing in the corner~ finally got around to experimenting with Photoshop, only to decide that a few simple words in the corner looked the best :P)

MT1 -- Polka Polishes FINAL

And here are the NAIL polishes I used (see what I did there, Buddy).

Travels

Hey guys, it’s Buddy! Long time no post, right? Heh heh… I know, I’m a disgrace. We should just call this Rover’s blog. Anyway, I kinda sorta have an excuse for my betrayal. I am in Walla Walla!

Image

My dad’s side of the family lives here in Washington state, and we see them almost every summer. This year we only have 5 days to spend in Walla Walla before we go on some cruise to Canada (which sounds amazing, but I wanted to get to spend more time here.) Anyway, we have about 8 days away from home, which gives me a good excuse to not practice so much of my Fountain of the Acqua Paola.

Yes, I play the piano. Rover and I are currently working on a flute / piano duet. Or, I should say, Rover is working on it. (Sorry! I’ll get to it! Probably.) Well, I’m currently working on this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CD0-bCXZVj0

It gets really weird, but I guess I like it. Okay, I’m getting off topic. As I was saying, I love it here in Walla Walla, but we visited at a bad time. I mean, I went to take a walk around a lake yesterday and it was NOT what I’d expected. My aunt told me she went there last spring and it was beautiful, but for me, the whole thing was pretty much like this:

Yes, I took those pictures. Well, I should get back to practicing piano right now but I’ll try to post more later. You’ll hear from me when I’m in Canada, I promise. Maybe.

Sunflowers, At Last

ImageMy sunflowers have flowered! They’re about 4 feet tall (not the 5-6′ height they say on the seed package, the liars) but at least their stalks are thick enough to support the heads this year (last year’s sunflowers were a MESS). Unfortunately, I’m at debate camp for a week, but I got my sister to take a picture for me. My flowers always bloom when I’m gone… maybe they’re trying to tell me something….

Now the problem is the moonflowers and morning glories. Apparently you have to stop watering them for a bit to get them to bloom, but it KEEPS RAINING! They’re quickly turning into bushy sort of things with lots of leaves and they’re trying to climb all over each other (I didn’t space them out well at all) but they still haven’t flowered… we’ll just have to see.

On another note: ahh, debate camp. We’re researching and writing cases on whether “unilateral military force by the United States is justified in preventing nuclear proliferation”. Realization: finding evidence on resolutions like that is very difficult.

P.S. Buddy’s posting soon with pictures of her travels from Washington (state) and Canada!

Beautiful Weeds

I was clearing away the really tall grass that shot up from my garden while I was away, and I found a rather nice-looking weed. It’s a vine, but not a choking vine; it has nice pale purple flowers and a very nice balance of leaves to flowers (unlike a lot of weeds, which may have the occasional nice flower but are mainly huge leafy monsters). It was really a nice-looking weed, so I just left it. I mean, roses are weeds, right? Why aren’t weeds perfectly acceptable? (says the person who was just spraying Roundup on the driveway…)

20130716-205109.jpg
And then it struck me exactly how mean we humans are. We choose flowers, many times based purely on appearance. We exterminate the native plants and replace them with beds of luxuriant soil, into which we place plants that need to be watered, plants that wouldn’t naturally survive. And when the natives try to reestablish themselves? They’re re-exterminated. It’s like the plant equivalent of colonialism, except the plants the humans support will always win. There isn’t going to be a revolution.
But I still love my sunflowers, I love seeing their bright yellow faces turned towards the furiously strong sunlight despite the fact that those very faces have to be bombarded with chemicals a couple times a week to prevent them from becoming deer food. I guess if the native plants want to keep living, well, they had better develop weaponry to combat the gardened (machine guns, perhaps?) or become prettier.

More Tape Nails

I think tape designs are the easiest to do. Especially when you’re like me and you don’t have ANY nail art brushes! There are so many fantastic designs you can do if you have a striper/dotter/a couple of tiny brushes but sadly I am lacking all of those. I did just order a set, though — but they were only $1 so I’m not entirely sure they’re… real. (I ordered these)

But anyways, until they arrive, I decided to another tape design. The last one was kind of a failure. I guess I didn’t put enough top coat on or something, but the silver metallic part just peeled right off about 15 minutes after I applied the top coat (maybe it didn’t help that I use the cheapest top coat I can find, Sally Hansen Advanced Strengthening No-Chip whatever). I put two layers of top coat on these and I was careful to let them dry completely before doing anything, so hopefully they’ll fare better this time. They have to, because I don’t have time to do anything else before leaving for debate camp on Wednesday!

So here they are:

And here are the polishes I used (I mean, NAIL polishes, sorry Buddy):

photo (14)

They’re Deborah Lippmann’s Rolling in the Deep (the dark blue) and Bad Moon Rising (the gray/silver one). I really, really love Bad Moon Rising! It’s so silvery and wonderful and goes great with pretty much any color. I have a bunch of other metallics that I really need to try but I’m going to wait until I get my brushes and try some real nail art on top of them.  So I guess I’ll just have to wait.
